IPTV in Saudi Arabia: internet speed and 4K, what you need to know before setting up your home
An IPTV subscription delivers TV over your internet connection, with no aerial and no satellite dish. Programs open in an app installed on a Smart TV, a box or a phone. In practice, you keep your own router and simply add an app to every screen in the house.
What internet speed do you need for a smooth picture in every room?
Remember two numbers: 15 Mbps per HD screen and 25 Mbps per 4K screen. When several rooms are watching at the same time, these values add up:
- 1 HD screen: 15 Mbps
- 1 4K screen: 25 Mbps
- 2 HD screens: 30 Mbps
- 1 4K screen + 2 HD screens: 55 Mbps
With fibre, there's usually plenty of headroom. On 5G or 4G, measure your real speed first: that's what counts, not the figure printed in your internet provider's offer.
Measure the speed where you watch
Run the speed test from the device you'll be watching on, and at the time when the whole household is watching (usually in the evening). Between the router in the living room and the bedroom TV, with two walls in between, the speed isn't the same. Whenever you can, connect the TV or box with an Ethernet cable ; otherwise use 5 GHz Wi-Fi, which is faster and less congested than 2.4 GHz.
4K at home: three conditions
- A program that is actually broadcast in 4K: that applies to a selection of channels and movies, not the whole library.
- A 4K TV and a player that supports it (a recent Smart TV, a 4K Android box or a Fire TV Stick 4K).
- A stable speed of around 25 Mbps dedicated to that screen.
